We seldom see much more than birds and squirrels on our Bunchberry Meadows walks. In spring and summer, when our shoes no longer crunch on snow and we no longer have to wear snow pants that swish, we will often see deer grazing in the meadows and even moose on occasion. It is all but impossible to walk quietly in winter conditions.
All that being said, we do see evidence of wildlife in the winter, their tracks, their scat and on occasion, the places where they bed down at night.
Coyote tracks
Our friendly favourite – the black capped chickadee
The very rare two legged hiker
Evidence of porcupine fine dining – we have only seen a porcupine here once, but they definitely love the tender sapling bark.
Red squirrels are a dime a dozen and they often scold us as we walk by
We hear Downy woodpeckers often, but it can be a chore to spot them close to the trails. This one posed for us for quite a while
Horses – the adjacent boarding stable has a good variety of horses out and about at any given time
White breasted nuthatch – we hear these birds out here all the time, but only recently have been able to spot them
That’s the lot for this hike. Tomorrow, back to travel.
